Hey, I made the long list! And so did Georgina, Claire, Gemma and Gregory! And Shawna, Jeannie and Jeannine! Thanks, Ellen.

You're welcome.

Thank you for posting the list! I'm wondering whether you considered Stone Telling poems for your list this year.
(Frozen) (Thread)

Nope. I didn't know it existed and no one told me about it. If you have a horror poem in an unusual venue I'd appreciate being told about it.

Thank you! You made my day. (Since it's non-obvious from my user name, this is Kat Howard.

Yay! I'm listed! Though there is a typo... my first name doesn't have an e on the end (Polenth Blake).
(Frozen) (Thread)

That can be fixed--at least here. Sorry about that.
(Frozen) (Parent) (Thread)

I'm about 20 miles beyond thrilled to have made this list! There are at least a handful of authors on here who I hold as personal literary inspirations. To be included with them for a story that I was afraid had vanished beneath the waves of a very busy year has me dancing. Thanks so much!

Ellen, thanks for including my short-short on the list! (My full name is Mary Elizabeth Burroughs -- I think there was a typo on the list.) It has made my week. I really do appreciate it.

Thanks Ellen,so much! Even though I've been writing for a while (mostly poetry & non-fiction), "The Coming of Ghosts" is technically my first short story sale, so this is really exciting. And I didn't know that "Let the Night In" had also got an honourable, so this really makes my day. Thanks!
(Frozen) (Thread)

Re: two hon mentions!

You're very welcome and a double congrats--for your "first short story sale" and the HMs.

I Loves me some Datlow, But I have to say every year is unworthy of filling the big Year's Best anthologies (SF/H/F,etc) with Something that reflects Good Story Making. Much Less a long Honorable Mention of what seems half of what was published that year.

Even if (for differing reasons) Some of the Years Best are left out of the Big Behomoths, Its really degrading to finer examples of Non Time Wasters to lump Tree Killers in with the Longitude of Interesting Writing.

It has always pained me to see Award Winners and Supreme Fiction left by the wayside simply because a editor feels the story has already received enough press. Especially when you consider the volume is apparently supposed to represent that particular year.
(not that this happens often....)

So lumping a few Quality stories in with a hundred Honorable Mentions doe's not really go out of the way to make me think it's worth going out of my way to find. And Lumping Lesser Stories with a few(always only a few) Fine Stories of the Year only degrades the intelligence of all who's time is limited on this earth.

I know why the Accadamy Awards doubled its Best Picture Nominees, But that has Nothing to do with Honoring the film as it does Milking them. Which of course lessons the overall outside impression of the single products.

It would be much more Meaningful if the Honored were much more finely Combed then lumping all Peers together for one big Hooray.

I know it would do the Readers who hate losing part of their lives to Bad Fiction, and can only be prepared to do it again and again as the search for fiction worth honoring continues with jaded Anxious Hope.

I'm not going to respond in detail but will say that the 700 on my HM list is about 20% of the stories I've read during the year. The stories to which I give HMs are those that I liked enough to note. That's what its always meant. As some who comment say it points out a lot of venues that they would not have been aware of otherwise. If that's ALL it accomplishes, I've done by job well.
